Situated in northwestern Germany, the Ruhr Metropolis region is known for its vibrant culture, prestigious universities and dynamic business landscape. Thanks to Business Metropole Ruhr Gmbh (BMR), the area is growing more famous around the world as a business hub through its trade fairs, events, projects, and consultancy services.

Usually the first point of contact for incoming and outgoing investors, BMR has played a key role in attracting investors and nurturing relationships with multinational companies, especially from Asia, now the strongest component of global economic growth.

With Metropole Ruhr Managing Director Rasmus Beck and Spokesperson Gregor Boldt

“I think the main reason investors from Asia are interested in this region is the mixture of startups and established companies. There are also these famous German small and medium enterprises or mittelstands, which are very diversified and which many Chinese investors want to buy,” BMR Managing Director Rasmus Beck said.

Another main attraction of the Ruhr region is the combination of a strong industrial core and the rural surroundings. With its economic vibrancy and pleasant living conditions, the area regularly hosts delegations of Chinese investors and is home to some 7,000 Chinese students.

BMR also organizes trade delegations to expand nurture networks in other countries and promote burgeoning sectors, such as green tech. After the domination of the mining and steel, the area now leads in environment friendly technology, specifically in power generation, as well as water and waste management.

Composed of more than 60 member-companies, Greentech.Ruhr  promotes investment in green technology and markets their technical capabilities to countries around the world, like China, Israel and the United States.

“We have a really good competence network for green tech here in the region and I think the green tech issue will be one of the main challenges of nearly every city in Asia, as well as in the U.S.,” Beck also said.

As for future collaborations, Beck finds great potential in the whole of Asia. China remains to be one of the region’s most important partners. Japan, on the other hand, is the main market for life science and health technologies. Other countries that BMR seeks to establish business relations with are Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, and South Korea.
